Government distance educationA state school teaches your enrolled child at home.25 providers
A state or territory school enrols your child and teaches them at home. This is enrolment in a school, not homeschooling, so you do not register as a home educator.
Each state sets its own entry rules, and most take only children in set categories. An adult still supervises at home, paces each day and sends work back.
Cost: Free to about $1,740 a year · Suits: Families who qualify and want teachers leading
Pros
- The school writes the program, teaches it and marks the work, so you do not plan it.
- Lessons, materials and a timetable arrive ready, tied to the curriculum.
- A child studying from home by distance education who meets isolation rules may qualify for a federal allowance.
- Some states let registered home educators take single subjects, such as languages.
Cons
- The workload can come close to a full school day, especially in high school.
- Work is due on the school's deadlines, with regular submissions and paperwork.
- The school sets the content, timetable and holidays, so there is less room to fit family life around it.
- Some states charge fees, such as Queensland's by choice places and South Australia's enrolment fees.

Planning, registration and record keeping helpHelp writing a learning plan, registering and keeping records.17 providers
Services, templates and apps help you write a learning plan, register, report and keep records. Registration needs a learning plan, not a purchased program.
In Queensland, registering is free, so paid help is optional. Plan requirements differ by state, so a template for one state may not fit another.
Cost: Free to about $950 a year, and up · Suits: New families facing registration paperwork
Pros
- Paid help turns your state's requirements into documents, which families new to registration value.
Cons
- Paid help can cost money for what free templates and volunteers also provide.

Common questions
Do I need to buy a curriculum to homeschool in Australia?
No. Registration needs a learning plan, not a purchased program. Many families mix programs or change one rather than follow a single package.
Is distance education the same as homeschooling?
No. With distance education your child is enrolled in a school, so you do not register as a home educator. Each state sets its own entry rules, and most take only children in set categories.
Is there government funding for homeschooling?
There is no national payment for home educating. Queensland pays eligible registered families a Back to School Boost and a Textbook and Resource Allowance from 2026, and the ACT has an equity fund for low income families. The federal isolated children allowance is for children who study by distance education, board away from home or live in a second home, and meet its isolation, disability or access rules.
What should I check before hiring a tutor?
Ask for a current Working With Children Check issued in your state. Experience varies widely, and a strong student is not the same as a trained teacher.
Where can I find free homeschool resources?
The national and state curriculum documents are free to read, and state education departments list free collections you can use at home. Public libraries lend books, ebooks and audiobooks, and home education associations keep free resource lists.
How this page was made
Each provider's details come from its own website, read on 22 September 2026. Prices and details change, so check with the provider before you pay. Where a provider does not publish something, the page says "Not stated". A tag shows only where the provider's own site says it. Christian friendly means the site says it is Christian or offers Christian material; no tag means the site did not say, not that it is not. Pros and cons are drawn from what Australian homeschooling families report online, and describe the type, not any one provider.
A provider is listed if it serves Australian families, publishes what it offers, and was operating on that date. If you run a service that is missing or described wrongly, tell us on the contact page with a link to the page that shows the change, and we will update it.
