Privacy policy

In short

We collect your email, what you type and upload, your child's age, and how your child does on practice sets.
We use it to run the site and to make it better. We do not sell it and we do not show ads.
What you type to make material is sent to OpenAI, which writes it.
We record how people use the site, with almost everything you type hidden. We do not record your child's pages.
Most of it is stored in the United States or Singapore.
Email privacy@homeschoolau.com to get a copy of your data or have it deleted.

Who we are

Homeschool AU (homeschoolau.com) is run by Rostyslav Sysenko, a sole trader in New South Wales, ABN 72 664 988 197. In this policy "we" means Homeschool AU.

We follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988.

What we collect

When you make an account

Your email address and a password. Passwords are stored scrambled, so we cannot read them.
An account for your child, which we make for you. It has no name and no email of its own. Your child signs in with your email and a code.
Your child's age and whether the voice helper is on, if you set them.

When you use the site

What you type to make worksheets, practice sets and plans, and any changes you ask for.
What you put in your plan: names, notes, links and files you upload.
The worksheets and practice sets we make for you.
How your child does on a practice set: which questions they answered, how many tries and how many hints. We do not show you a score.
Which characters your child has collected.
Messages you send through the contact form, and the email or phone number you give.

What you type may include things about your child, such as their name or what they find hard. That can include health information, such as a diagnosis. Only tell us what you want the material to take into account. If you do tell us, you agree that we use it to make the material.

Automatically, when you visit

Which pages you visit, what you click, how long you stay, and your browser and device.
Your IP address, which PostHog uses to work out roughly where you are, such as your city. We do not store it in our own database.
Recordings of how the site is used. These show the page and the mouse moving. Everything you type into a box is hidden, except the topic box on the worksheet generator. The code your child signs in with is hidden too.

We do not record your child's pages. On the pages under /student/, which are your child's portal, their rewards and the practice set player, we count page visits and a few events, such as a set being finished. We do not record the screen or collect what they click.

Why we use it

To run the site: sign you in, make your material, keep your plan, and show your child what you gave them.
To make the site better. We look at page visits, events, recordings and what is in the database to see what works and what does not. We use it for this and nothing else.
To answer you when you contact us.
To keep the site safe and fix faults.

We do not sell your information. We do not use it for advertising. We do not use it to make decisions about you or your child that have a legal or similarly big effect.

Who else sees it

We use these companies to run the site. Each gets only what it needs for its part.

Supabase stores accounts, plans, files and material. The database is in Singapore.
OpenAI makes worksheets, practice sets, plans and search results from what you type, and runs the voice helper. United States. OpenAI does not use it to train its models, and keeps it for up to 30 days.
PostHog collects the page visits, events and recordings above. When you are signed in, it also gets your email address, so we can tell one account from another. Your child's account sends no email address. United States.
Vercel hosts the site and keeps logs of each request. United States.
Google Fonts supplies the fonts, so Google sees your IP address when a page loads. United States.
Discord is where we get told about new accounts, contact form messages and requests for material, so we can see what people ask for. United States.

These companies store and process information outside Australia. We stay responsible for how it is handled.

The voice helper

The voice helper is off until you turn it on in your account settings. When it is on, your child can talk to it during a practice set. Their voice goes live to OpenAI, with the question on the screen and their answers. We do not record or keep what they say. OpenAI keeps it for up to 30 days, like everything else it is sent, and does not train on it.

Your child

Your child's account is part of yours. You set it up, you decide what they see, and you can see what they have done. If your child is under 15, you agree to this policy for them.

For your child to read

Your grown up made your account.
We keep your age and the sets you do.
Your grown up can see which sets you did.
We do not keep what you say to the voice helper.
We do not record your screen.
We never sell what we know about you.

Cookies and storage in your browser

The site stores your sign in on your device, so you stay signed in. PostHog stores a cookie so it can tell one visit from the next. There are no advertising cookies.

How long we keep it

Your account, plan, files and material: until you ask us to delete them.
Recordings: 30 days.
What reaches us in Discord (new accounts, contact form messages, requests for material): until you ask us to delete it.

How we keep it safe

Your plan and files can only be read when you are signed in, and only by you and your child. We can reach them too, and only look when we need to fix something or you ask us to. Worksheet and practice set links also need a code. Everything travels encrypted.

If there is a data breach that could seriously harm you, we will tell you.

Get a copy, fix it or delete it

Email privacy@homeschoolau.com from the address on your account and say what you want: a copy of your information, a correction, or for it to be deleted. You can also use the contact form. We reply within 30 days. There is no charge.

You can change your child's age and the voice helper yourself in your account settings.

Complaints

If you think we have mishandled your information, emailprivacy@homeschoolau.com. We will reply within 30 days.

If you are not happy with our reply, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner atoaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.

Changes to this policy

When we change what we collect or who sees it, we update this page and the date at the top.
